Blend the rice
10 minBlend the leftover cooked rice with the milk until smooth.
Puto is a classic Filipino steamed dessert, usually made with rice flour. In this homemade version, leftover cooked rice is blended with milk to make the batter. Since it is steamed without frying or added oil, it helps reduce food waste and makes a heart-friendly breakfast option.
Blend the leftover cooked rice with the milk until smooth.
Add the sugar, baking powder, egg, and salt to the mixture and whisk well.
Divide the batter among small cups and let it rest for 15 minutes so the baking powder can work.
Steam the cups for 20 minutes in a pot with boiling water. When a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, remove the cups from the steamer.
If you steam the batter without resting it, the baking powder will not work fully and the cakes may not rise enough. Wait until the water in the steamer is boiling before adding the cups, or the cooking time will be longer. Allergens: milk and eggs.
