A refreshing Vietnamese street drink, trà tắc balances brewed black tea with crushed mandarin and a little sugar, then is served over plenty of ice. This lower-sugar recipe suits those looking for a refreshing, low-calorie drink.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Brew the tea

10 min

Brew black tea with boiling water for 10 minutes, then strain.

2

Crush the mandarins

3 min

Halve and gently crush mandarins with their peel in a glass for 3 minutes, releasing the peel’s bittersweet oils into the tea.

3

Mix and sweeten

2 min

Mix brewed tea with crushed mandarin and granulated sugar for 2 minutes.

4

Serve over ice

2 min

Pour the mixture over plenty of ice and serve.

Reminder

When crushing the mandarins, gently press the peel too; its bittersweet, refreshing aroma is the signature of trà tắc. Crush too much and bitterness may dominate.
