A beloved South African street food made by filling yeasted dough with spiced ground beef and frying it until golden. Crispy outside and soft inside, these hearty bites make a satisfying snack.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Knead and proof the dough

75 min

Knead the flour, yeast, lukewarm water, sugar, and salt into a smooth dough. Cover and let it rise in a warm place for 75 minutes.

2

Cook the filling

15 min

Saute the onion, add the ground beef, red pepper flakes, and cumin, and cook until the liquid has evaporated. Let the filling cool.

3

Fill and shape

10 min

Take portions of the risen dough, add some cooled filling, gather the edges to seal, and roll into balls.

4

Fry

15 min

Fry the balls in moderately hot oil until golden and cooked through.

Reminder

Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place so it can expand properly. Keep the frying oil at a moderate temperature; oil that is too hot can burn the outside while leaving the inside undercooked. Allergen: contains wheat (gluten).
