This classic English preserve is made by simmering apples with onion, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar and mustard seed until thick and glossy. It is a spiced companion for cheese boards and cold cuts, and a frequent guest on party tables.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Dice

10 min

Dice the apples and the onion.

2

Bring to the boil

5 min

Bring the vinegar, brown sugar, mustard seed, ginger, cinnamon and salt to the boil in a pan, then add the apple and onion.

3

Thicken

25 min

Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 25 minutes until the mixture thickens and the apples soften.

4

Jar it

5 min

Ladle into sterilised jars while hot and seal the lids tightly, then leave to cool at room temperature.

Reminder

Fill the jars with the chutney while it is still hot and seal the lids immediately, otherwise an air gap can form and invite mould.
