A small-portion street food from Yogyakarta, nasi kucing pairs a modest scoop of rice with spicy sambal, roasted peanuts and grilled tempeh. Its small rice portion and generous vegetable accompaniments make it a heart-healthy, lower-carbohydrate choice.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Cook the rice

20 min

Boil the rice as usual and divide it into small, thin portions.

2

Make the sambal

15 min

Sauté the red chilli, tomato and crushed garlic cloves in olive oil, blend until smooth and season with salt.

3

Fry the tempeh

10 min

Slice the tempeh and pan-fry it in a little oil until both sides are golden.

4

Plate the portions

5 min

Arrange the sambal, fried tempeh and roasted peanuts beside each small rice portion and serve.

Reminder

Keep the pan on low heat while making the sambal; high heat can scorch the tomato and leave a bitter taste.

Editor's Note Editörün Notu

If you cannot find tempeh, you can replace it with boiled chickpeas; the protein content stays similar but the texture becomes softer.

Sambalı blenderden geçirmeden önce domatesi çok kısa sürede kavurdum, bu yüzden sos beklediğimden biraz sulu kaldı; tarifte belirtilen kavurma süresini daha uzun tutmam gerekirmiş, ikinci denemede düzelteceğim.

Küçük porsiyonlar sayesinde iki tabak yesem bile kendimi ağır hissetmedim, sambalın acısı da tam kıvamındaydı.
