Made by slowly simmering apple with onion, vinegar and spices into a thick chutney, this Irish preserve is a classic accompaniment to a cheese board. The long cooking time lets the flavours fully meld together.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Chop the produce

15 min

Dice the apple and onion.

2

Bring to a boil

10 min

Bring the diced apple and onion to a boil in a wide pot with the vinegar, brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves and salt.

3

Thicken

55 min

Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 55 minutes until thick and sticky.

4

Jar it

5 min

Fill the hot chutney into sterilised jars and seal tightly.

Reminder

Sterilise the jars before filling, or the chutney will spoil quickly. Once opened, consume within 1 month and keep refrigerated.
