Siopao, the Philippines' beloved street food, is made by filling yeasted, lightly sweet dough with a mixture of chicken and soy sauce and steaming it. With its soft texture and sweet-savory balance, it's a satisfying snack suited to any meal.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Knead the dough and let it rise

70 min

Knead the flour, yeast, lukewarm water, sugar, vegetable oil and salt into a smooth dough; let rise in a warm place for 70 minutes.

2

Cook the filling

15 min

Sauté the onion and garlic, add the shredded chicken, mix in soy sauce and sugar, cook, then let cool.

3

Fill and roll

15 min

Take pieces of the risen dough, place filling inside, gather the edges to seal, and set on parchment paper.

4

Steam

20 min

Steam over boiling water with the lid closed for 18-20 minutes.

Reminder

Important: Let the dough rise in a warm spot for at least 1 hour, otherwise it won't rise and will stay tough. Caution: Don't open the lid of the steamer too often while cooking, as escaping steam can cause the dough to collapse. Allergen: contains wheat (gluten) and soy sauce.

Editor's Note Editörün Notu

Placing pieces of parchment paper under the steamer lets the siopao come off the base easily without sticking.
