How Many Calories Are in a Serving of Grilled Eggplant?

A serving of grilled eggplant, roughly 200 grams of flesh with a teaspoon of olive oil drizzled on top, averages 90 to 110 calories. The number stays low because eggplant itself is mostly water with very little carbohydrate, so most of the calories in the finished dish come from the oil added afterward.

Left completely plain, with no oil at all, the same serving drops to around 40-50 calories. That is why a single fixed number misses the point — the honest answer is a range that depends on how the eggplant is finished.

Why does eggplant's calorie count swing so much?

Raw eggplant has about 25 calories per 100 grams, a low figure among vegetables. Change the cooking method and the picture shifts completely: boiling or grilling adds almost nothing to that number, while frying lets the spongy flesh soak up a large amount of oil.

The same medium eggplant, once fried, can climb to 200-250 calories per serving depending on how much oil it absorbed. That gap is exactly why eggplant gets called both a light vegetable and an oil sponge.

What does grilling offer over frying?

Grilling cooks the eggplant with direct heat, so it needs no oil of its own; as the skin darkens, the water inside evaporates and the flesh concentrates. That is how it keeps both the calorie count low and a smoky flavor.

Even a thin film of oil brushed on a baking tray adds a few calories per serving; grilling directly over open flame needs no oil at all, which keeps it the lowest-calorie option of the three.

What does eggplant offer nutritionally?

Most of a serving's calories come from carbohydrate, while protein stays quite low. Fibre, on the other hand, is relatively high, which is part of why eggplant feels filling for so few calories.

The fibre and antioxidant compounds concentrated in the skin survive cooking fairly well, so eggplant cooked with its skin on loses less bulk and holds its shape better on the plate.

How do toppings change the total?

Grilled eggplant is usually served with garlicky yoghurt, pomegranate molasses or roasted peppers, and each of those adds its own share of calories. A spoon of garlicky yoghurt adds roughly 20-25 calories, while a teaspoon of pomegranate molasses adds around 15.

Salads built with richer toppings like tahini or walnuts can push a serving past 200 calories; at that point the total is no longer driven by the eggplant but by the sauce and nuts piled on top.

In short

Grilled eggplant runs anywhere from 40 to 110 calories depending on how much oil is added, while frying can more than double that. Grilling or oven-charring stays the more measured choice for anyone keeping the serving light.

Keeping the olive oil to about a teaspoon preserves the eggplant's light character while keeping the calorie count far below what frying would produce. The toppings and nuts added on the side often carry more calories than the eggplant itself, which is the detail worth watching.
