A classic sauce served with British breakfasts, this rich, tangy condiment is made by slowly simmering tomatoes and apples with apple cider vinegar and spices, then straining it. The apple provides all its sweetness; no additional sweetener is used.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Simmer the ingredients

25 min

Bring the tomatoes, apple, onion, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, cloves and salt to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring frequently, for 25 minutes until thickened.

2

Blend and strain

5 min

Blend the mixture until smooth, then pass it through a fine-mesh strainer to remove the skins.

3

Bottle and cool

10 min

Pour the strained sauce into a clean bottle and leave it to cool for 10 minutes, until it reaches room temperature.

Reminder

Stir the mixture frequently as it simmers to keep it from sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning.
