Crunchies are a classic South African snack cake, made by mixing oats and desiccated coconut into butter melted with syrup, pressing the mixture into a tray and baking it. Pressing the mixture firmly into the tray is what lets it hold together in neat slices once cooled. Made from simple ingredients, it's a budget-friendly option for packing into a lunchbox.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Mix the dry ingredients

5 min

Mix the oats, sugar, desiccated coconut, flour, baking soda and salt together in a bowl.

2

Melt the syrup

5 min

Melt the butter with the grape molasses in a pan over low heat.

3

Combine and press into the tin

5 min

Stir the melted mixture into the dry ingredients until well combined, then press firmly into a lined tray.

4

Bake

20 min

Bake in the oven preheated to 170°C for 20 minutes until the top turns golden.

5

Cool and slice

15 min

Let the tray cool completely on the counter, then cut into even slices.

Reminder

Press the mixture firmly into the tin with the back of a spoon; a loosely packed mixture falls apart when sliced. Allergens: contains gluten (flour) and milk and dairy (butter).

Editor's Note Editörün Notu

Don't slice the tray before it has cooled completely to room temperature; cutting it warm makes the crunchies crumble.
