Gatsby is an iconic Cape Town party sandwich made by stuffing a long bread roll with crisp chips, spiced meatballs and a hot sauce. Serving every layer inside the bread hot is what keeps the sandwich holding together. With no dairy in its ingredients, it's also a fitting choice for anyone sensitive to lactose.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Fry the chips

10 min

Heat the sunflower oil and fry the potato sticks until crisp and golden, then season with salt.

2

Cook the meatballs

5 min

Shape the ground beef into small meatballs and cook them in the same oil for 5 minutes.

3

Fill the roll

5 min

Split the roll open lengthwise and stuff it with the chips, meatballs and hot sauce.

4

Serve

2 min

Cut the sandwich in half and serve hot.

Reminder

Cut the roll open right before filling it; opened too early, it dries out from exposure to air.

Editor's Note Editörün Notu

Adding a few pickle slices alongside the hot sauce gives the sandwich the refreshing note typical of Cape Town eateries.
