Whole pears are simmered slowly in a lightly sweetened syrup with cinnamon stick, cloves and orange zest until they turn beautifully soft. Keeping the sugar low and the method simple makes this dessert a heart-conscious choice for brunch.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Prepare the Pears

10 min

Peel the pears, keeping them whole with the stems intact.

2

Boil the Syrup

5 min

Bring the water, sugar, cinnamon stick, cloves and orange zest to the boil in a pot.

3

Poach Slowly

30 min

Place the pears in the syrup and simmer covered over low heat, turning occasionally, for 30 minutes until soft.

4

Cool and Serve

5 min

Cool the pears in the syrup to room temperature, then slice and serve.

Reminder

Do not forget to turn the pears occasionally while poaching, or one side softens more than the other. Since the sugar is kept low, the compote should be eaten within a few days when refrigerated.

Editor's Note Editörün Notu

If the pears turn out too firm, leaving them in the syrup for another 10 minutes is enough; there is no need to cook them again.
