Made by filling whole wheat dough with a spiced minced meat mixture and crimping the edges closed, these curry puffs come from South Africa's Cape Malay kitchen. They make a filling, hand-held starter for a crowd.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Prepare the dough

10 min

Knead the whole wheat flour, oil, water and salt into a smooth dough, cover it and let it rest for 10 minutes.

2

Prepare the filling

10 min

Soften the onion in oil until golden, add the minced beef, and cook with the curry powder, turmeric and black pepper for 10 minutes until the meat browns.

3

Fill and seal

10 min

Roll the rested dough into small rounds, spoon the filling into the centre, and crimp the edges tightly closed.

4

Fry

8 min

Fry the curry puffs in hot oil for 8 minutes, until both sides turn golden.

Reminder

Do not roll the dough before it has rested, or it will tear easily. Allergens: contains wheat (gluten).
