Lokshyna z makom is a classic dessert on Ukraine's Christmas Eve Sviata Vecheria table: boiled thin noodles are tossed with poppy seeds crushed with honey. Even without added sugar, it carries a natural sweetness.

Step by Step

How to make it?

1

Soak the poppy seeds

30 min

Soak the poppy seeds in hot water for 30 minutes to soften them.

2

Boil the noodles

10 min

Boil the thin noodles in salted water for the time indicated on the package, then drain.

3

Grind the poppy seeds

8 min

Drain the poppy seeds and pound them with the honey and currants in a mortar or food processor into a thick paste.

4

Combine with the noodles

5 min

Toss the hot noodles with the poppy seed paste and butter and serve warm.

Reminder

If you skip soaking the poppy seeds before grinding, they stay gritty and don't release their full flavour; don't leave out the hot water soak. Allergens: contains wheat (gluten), milk and dairy (butter).
